This research project was a part of my MSc in Digital Business. I undertook this project with limited guidance from a supervisor. It lasted for almost a year with work beginning in October 2020 and submission taking place in September 2021.

The dissertation was titled: 'An Exploration of Stakeholder Relations & Governance in Esports: Players’ Perceptions on Power-Dependency and Imbalance of Power.’ It involved direct research with professional players and teams. The full paper is available upon request.

Solutions:

  • Kept a research diary.

  • Leveraged technology to overcome organisational and Covid related difficulties. This included: Trello, Endnote, NVivo, and Zoom.

  • Contacted research participants on platforms familiar to them. This included: Discord, Twitter, LinkedIn and Metafy.

Challenges:

  • Extensive reading (50+ papers and articles)

  • COVID-19 (remote research)

  • Organising a year-long multi-faceted project

  • Accessing research participants

Areas for Improvement:

  • Survey may have been a better method for time-conscious participants.

  • Different access strategies may have given more results.

Final Thoughts:

I was particularly happy with how my dissertation turned out. In particular, I got started working on the project right after the end of the second semester, which meant that the project was almost finished by July and it freed up more time for me to spend getting my APM PFQ / Scrum Master certifications and building games.
